Orca Bay top finished!

I just sewed the last border on this baby and laid it on the cobblestones in my backyard so I could take a photo of it. I'm so happy that it's finished! I was worried that it would be challenging to get the pieced borders onto the quilt--can you believe I've never sewn pieced borders before now?---but it wasn't bad at all. I had to adjust one side a bit, but the other was perfect. Go figure.

For anyone not familiar with this quilt, I made it as a mystery quilt run by Bonnie Hunter. A link to her website is here.

My quilting sewing machine is in the shop, so I can't get started on the quilting immediately. Maybe I'll wait for the machine to be repaired, and do some simple quilting on this myself....or maybe I'll send it off to a professional. I'm a little reluctant to let someone else work on it, after all the hours I've put into this project, but it's probably the best choice for me if I want it done anytime soon, and if I want it to look good too!

  1. Wow Ginny its absolutely fantastic. I cannot imagine doing anything like this. I know what you mean about sending quilts off to be quilted. I finished my Linus quilt and then did the quilting on my machine and this was only a small quilt, but it took ages and I cannot tell you the amount of stabs I had from the pins!! Why are quilting pins like needles? I love the colours in your quilt. Susie x

  3. It amazing! That top is just a masterpiece and I can't wait to see the finished quilt. I know how you feel about the quilting part .... terrifying! I've been hand quilting since last year and I love it but it takes a long time. No matter what you do this quilt will be an heirloom in the family forever.

  4. Congratulations! It is a lovely quilt. I love that pieced border. I know I could never make a machine behave that well.

  5. It has so much energy, what a beautiful quilt. I love how you framed it with some quiet space and before the stunning border. It took me a long while to do a pieced border too, there is so much math! I love the variety of grays and blacks and the patterns that you got in the corners and middle. Terrific. I can't wait to see it in person.

  6. Woo Hoo....look at you!!! I really like your color choices and am quite impressed this is your first pieced border!!!
I'm with you on the quilting. It's hard to think someone else will be quilting/messing with your hard earned finish. I struggle with that too.....decisions decisions!
Whether you quilt it yourself or not it is still going to be a fabulous quilt!
